01. Overview

Build Bazaar is a startup designed to support builders, interior designers, and architects by providing them with an easy way to purchase materials at wholesale rates for their projects. By eliminating middlemen, it helps professionals save costs and streamline procurement.

In addition to material sourcing, Build Bazaar also serves as a platform for architects, interior designers, and engineers to showcase their work. Similar to Dribbble, it allows professionals to create personalized microsites, enhancing their online presence. This feature enables potential clients to view, compare, and directly hire professionals, making it easier for both service providers and customers to connect and collaborate.

02. Problem

"The existing website failed to generate business or attract investors due to ineffective design and poor user experience. Users struggled with product discovery, search, and the booking process, while agencies, designers, and engineers lacked a structured way to showcase their work. My challenge was to redesign the platform, improve search and user flow, and create a system for professionals to build microsites, all while ensuring a seamless and engaging experience to drive conversions and business growth."

03. Product Market Fit

This product tackles a major challenge for builders, sourcing the right materials at the right time. Limited availability in local markets often leads to higher transportation costs and delays, making construction projects more expensive and inefficient.

According to the NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI) survey (January 2023), 96% of builders cited rising material costs as their biggest concern in 2022, followed by availability and supply timing issues (86%). These challenges have consistently topped the list since 2021, causing project delays and escalating costs.

The problem isn’t exclusive to builders, architects and interior designers also struggle with limited material choices, affecting their ability to execute designs effectively. To solve this, an e-commerce platform is being developed, offering a wide range of unique materials and building supplies at competitive prices, helping professionals complete projects on time and within budget.

Additionally, homeowners and individuals looking to renovate can easily connect with vetted designers, architects, and builders, either by submitting a request or reaching out directly, making the process faster and more convenient.

04. Secondary Research & Solution

With a clear understanding of the product, client, and problem, the next step was to develop an effective solution. To do this, we needed to answer key questions:

How can users easily find a wide range of materials in one place?

How can builders purchase all necessary materials for a project seamlessly?

How can the platform help architects and designers make informed decisions about the materials they use?

How can products, materials, and projects be efficiently managed?

To build a solution that truly meets user needs, I conducted a comparative study to analyze the market landscape before designing our product. This research helped identify key players, their features, and user behaviors. By evaluating what works and what doesn’t, I could refine the approach, incorporating the best features, eliminating inefficiencies, and adding unique improvements to create a user-friendly platform.

Limited Product Availability
Many existing websites offer a narrow selection of materials, making it difficult for builders and designers to explore specific brands or use cases.

Lack of Support for Designers & Architects
Most platforms do not provide tools to help professionals make informed decisions about materials.

Not Tailored for the Indian Market
Many successful platforms, like Houzz, cater primarily to international audiences, leaving a gap in the India-specific market.

These insights shaped the foundation of our solution, a comprehensive e-commerce platform that not only centralizes material sourcing but also provides valuable support to architects, designers, and builders, ensuring a smooth and efficient experience.

These are the current designs for the website.

The existing designs were unfinished and overly complex, resembling basic wireframes rather than a well-defined product. The user flow was confusing, making navigation difficult, and essential features like hiring architects or builder companies were completely missing. The platform only allowed for basic product discovery, which was not enough to support the business goals.

With an investment round approaching in two months, it was crucial to quickly develop an MVP that showcased the platform’s core functionality. This meant streamlining screen flows, simplifying navigation, and ensuring the design was intuitive and user-friendly, all while keeping the essential features intact for a strong investor pitch.

04. Solution & Hi-Fi Responsive Design

The landing page provides a clear breakdown of how the marketplace works, guiding builders and architects through the process. It highlights key features like material sourcing, project management, and hiring professionals, making it easier for users to understand the platform’s benefits at a glance.

By simplifying complex workflows into easy-to-follow steps, the page ensures that users can quickly grasp how the marketplace can assist them in finding materials, comparing options, and connecting with experts for their projects.

The Explore page is designed to help buyers easily navigate and discover products and brands. With a well-structured layout, users can quickly find what they need while also being introduced to new and trending products. This improves product visibility and enhances the overall browsing experience, making material sourcing more efficient.

The Details Section provides users with a comprehensive view of the work done by designers, architects, and design agencies. It includes detailed case study pages, where professionals can showcase their projects, expertise, and design approach. This helps potential clients evaluate their work, compare different professionals, and make informed hiring decisions for their projects.

The "Shop by Designs" feature allows architects and interior designers to explore products in a more visual and contextual way. Instead of just browsing through a list of materials, they can see how different products look, feel, and function within various room settings like living rooms, kitchens, offices, and more.

This feature helps designers and architects make informed decisions by providing a realistic preview of how materials, colors, textures, and styles work together in actual spaces. It eliminates guesswork and ensures that the selected products align with the overall aesthetic and functional needs of a project. By making the shopping experience more intuitive and immersive, this feature enhances confidence in product selection, ultimately leading to better design outcomes.

The dedicated product page not only includes comprehensive product details like pricing, availability, material specifications, and brand information, but also integrates the "Shop by Designs" feature.

The product page showcases how the product looks in different settings, rooms, and environments, giving builders and designers the flexibility to choose products that align with their specific requirements and design aesthetics. This feature enhances decision-making by providing a realistic preview of materials in various contexts.

The layout adapts to different screen sizes, making it easy for users to browse, visualize products, and make purchases effortlessly on smartphones and tablets.

06. Key Takeaways

Design is all about efficiency, clarity, and trust. There is no single right way to tackle a challenge, only the most efficient approach based on user needs and business goals. Over time, experience helps refine strategies to solve problems effectively.

It’s important not to overwhelm clients with too many options, as it can lead to confusion for both them and the designer. Most importantly, trust the process, embrace learning from mistakes.
